Vearing Family – Denmark, Great Southern, WA

Emma George

Our family loves holidaying in Denmark and we always spend a week there with friends over the Christmas holiday break. Located 4.5 hours south of Perth, it has a beautiful stretch of coastline, a fantastic surf beach and a shallow inlet right across the road from the Park. You can stock up on groceries in the town and the bakery serves the best vanilla slices.

We always stay at the Denmark Ocean Beach Holiday Park, which is a BIG4 Holiday Park. We love it because it covers a huge area and while there are cabins and vans towards the front, when you drive further there are dirt roads that wind through shaded bush sites (powered and unpowered) that are whisper quiet at night.

The kids, of course, love the facilities that come with a BIG4 (bouncy pillow, pedal cars, outdoor movies) and I love it because they are happy and it has all the amenities I need but the real fun is just outside.

Our daily routine begins with sending a scout over to the beach to check out the weather and surf conditions. After breakie, we pack our lunch and head across the road. The estuary is great if you have small children as the water is warm and shallow, the beach is protected and kayaks and stand ups are lots of fun. Our older kids love to paddle out to the middle on their boogie boards and get carried along by the current.

When we go surfing, we head to Ocean Beach where there are long, rolling waves, perfect for beginners. The kids can go 20m off the shore and still be standing in chest deep water.

Green Pool is another favourite spot where at high tide, a jump off the rocks is guaranteed to get the adrenaline pumping. The walk the trails through the beautiful marri, karri and tingle forests are simply stunning and we also like to from the bridge back at the estuary as the sun goes down. It doesn’t get much better than that!!
